The cause of MS is currently unknown. It is believed to be an autoimmune condition in which the body’s immune system mistakenly targets and attacks its own tissue. Specifically, in MS, the immune system dysfunction destroys the fatty substance that coats and protects nerve fibers in the brain and spinal cord.
MS currently has no known cure. The primary goals of treatment for MS are to manage symptoms, slow the progression of the disease, and promote recovery after attacks. Some individuals may only experience mild symptoms, and thus require minimal medical intervention.
