A corneal abrasion is a scratch or scrapes on your cornea’s surface. Corneal abrasions are frequently caused by fingernails, cosmetics brushes, and tree branches.Other causes of corneal abrasion include rubbing your eyes and having particularly dry eyes.

The cornea is densely packed with nerve cells. Pain receptor cells transmit pain to alert us to possible injury to the eye’s surface. Our cornea has hundreds of times more pain receptors than our skin.

SYMPTOMS SYMPTOMS

  • If you’ve scratched your eye before, you’ll probably remember how it feels. If not, you might:
    • Feel like you have sand or grit in your eye
    • Have pain, especially when you open or close your eye
    • Notice tearing and redness
    • Become sensitive to light
    • Have blurred vision

​You might get a scratch if you:

  • Poke your eye with a fingernail, pen, or makeup brush
  • Get dirt, sand, sawdust, ash, or some other foreign matter in your eye
  • Get chemicals in your eye
  • Rub it too hard
  • Wear poor-fitting or dirty contact lenses
  • Get a certain type of eye infection
  • Have surgery without proper eye protection
  • Play sports or engage in high-risk physical activity without safe eyewear
  • Overwear your contact lenses

You may not feel symptoms right away. As a result, you may not be able to figure out what caused it.

CURRENT TREATMENT  TREATMENT

You should avoid rubbing your eyes if you have a corneal abrasion. Only an eye doctor can advise you on the best way to treat a corneal abrasion. Your doctor will inspect the eye and remove any unwanted items discovered. This treatment will be made more comfortable by using anesthetic eye drops.
 
Minor corneal abrasions usually heal within a few days. Eye drops may be recommended by the doctor to keep the eye moist and to lessen the risk of infection. It is critical to use these eye drops exactly as directed. It may also be required to discontinue the use of contact lenses for a period. Larger corneal abrasions heal more slowly than smaller ones.

Patients with severe pain or light sensitivity may be prescribed oral pain medication until the abrasion recovers. Because of the harmful effects of repeated administration of these medications, topical numbing agents (anesthetics) that may be used in the office to allow examination and treatment should never be used at home.

Subconjunctival injection of mesenchymal stem cells for corneal failure due to limbal stem cell deficiency.

​MSC differentiation and paracrine signaling via exosomes are widely used to mediate these effects. Exosomes’ cell-free nature allows them to avoid problems with cell-fate control and tumorigenesis, and the vesicle content can be genetically modified for optimal therapeutic affinity. The current research focus is on pharmacology and toxicology, xeno-free processing with sustained delivery, scale-up production in compliance with Good Manufacturing Practice regulations, and cost-effectiveness. Injection, topical, and/or engineered bioscaffold administration routes are also being investigated for their potential use in treating corneal diseases.
