NK Cell Program

CELL-BASED IMMUNOTHERAPY

NATURAL KILLER CELLS RESEARCH

DEFINITION

Natural Killer Cells (NK Cells) are a type of lymphocyte that belong to the same family as T and B cells and are derived from a common progenitor. NK cell maturation begins in the bone marrow and is a continuous process. As cells of the innate immune system, NKs are classified as group I innate lymphocytes that respond to a variety of pathological challenges, including viruses, infected cells, and early signs of cancer.
They are known for their ability to kill tumour cells without any priming or prior activation. Additionally, they secrete cytokines such as IFNγ and TNFα, which activate other immune cells such as macrophages and dendritic cells to enhance the immune response. NK cells not only protect against disease but are also an important aspect of a healthy body.

IMPORTANCE OF NK CELL INSIDE OUR BODY

Inside the bloodstream, NK cells are constantly interacting with other cells. The decision of whether or not an NK cell kills these cells is determined by a balance of signals from activating receptors and inhibitory receptors on the surface of the cell. Activating receptors recognize molecules that are expressed on the surface of cancer cells and infected cells, leading to the activation of the NK cell. Inhibitory receptors act as a control mechanism for NK cell killing.

MHC-I receptors are expressed by normal, healthy cells as a marker that these cells are “self.” Inhibitory receptors on the surface of the NK cell recognize cognate MHC I, preventing the NK cell from activating and killing. Cancer cells and infected cells often lose their MHC I, making them vulnerable to killing by NK cells. Once the decision to kill is made, the NK cell releases cytotoxic granules containing perforin and granzymes, resulting in the lysis of the target cell.

Patients who lack NK cells and cytotoxicity are highly susceptible to viruses, pathogens, senility, and cancer.

HOW DOES OUR CELLTINK WORK & TREATMENT GOALS

CelltiMax

CelltiNK is a form of Immunotherapy that uses Natural Killer cells to fight cancers and infections in patients. This research has developed memory-like NK cells which can:

    • Enhance cancer cell recognition
    • Enhance cancer fighting capacity
    • Potentially provide longer lasting effects

*Each patient is attended to on a case-to-case basis. Treatment will vary for each patient
